There was a morning when my own child arrived at school without shoes. Not with the wrong shoes. Without shoes. It was an impressively efficient reminder that principals are not issued special protection from ordinary family chaos.
School leaders spend a great deal of time helping other people solve problems. Then life occasionally hands us a small, shoeless reality check and invites us to laugh at ourselves.
I think that kind of humility matters. People do not need leaders who appear perfectly polished at every moment. They need leaders who can acknowledge the imperfect moment, find the humor, and keep moving. Preferably after locating some shoes.
